Advent marks the beginning of a new Church liturgical year, a time when we wait in joyful hope for the coming of our Lord.
The circular Advent wreath, which holds the four Advent candles, is a symbol of the continuous love of God which has no beginning and no end. Traditionally, wreaths were made of evergreen leaves which represented the eternal nature of God’s love.
The first candle of the Advent Wreath, lit this weekend, is often named the Prophets’ Candle after the prophets who prepared the way for the future coming of the Messiah.
Prayer for Lighting Advent Candles Lord Jesus, Master of both light and darkness, send your Holy Spirit upon our preparation for Christmas. We who have so much to do seek quiet spaces to hear Your voice each day. We who are anxious over many things look forward to your coming among us. We who are blessed in so many ways long for the complete joy of Your Kingdom. We whose hearts are heavy seek the joy of Your presence. We are Your people, walking in darkness yet seeking the light. To You, we say, “Come, Lord Jesus!” Fr Henri J.M Nouwen
A parish Advent Discussion Group will be held in St Dominic’s Parish Centre each Friday morning during Advent, after the 9am Mass. The first gathering will be on Friday, 8 December. All are welcome.
